The Program

The Global Education Graduate Diploma is designed to provide teachers with a broad field of study that explores the urgent need for global education in schools. Through a critical study of worldly events and circumstances, teachers will learn to weave globally diverse perspectives into their practice and foster a sense of citizenship and recognition of the worlds' diversity among their students. Diploma graduates may enter the Masters of Education in Educational Leadership with 30 graduate credits completed. The GEGD program will accept an intake of students every two years.

Note: The GEGD program is offered as a part-time, cohort based and blended model for practicing teachers. Classes meet full-time on Nanaimo or Cowichan campus in the month of July for the summer sessions and are offered online in the Fall and Spring Semesters. Classes will alternate between the Cowichan and Nanaimo campuses.

Admission Requirements

Completion of a Bachelor of Education degree with a cumulative grade point average of "B" in the final two years.

Notes on Admission

  • Students who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements may not be necessarily be admitted to the program.
  • This program is not currently available for international students.

Transfer from other Institutions

Applicants may apply to the Dean for possible transfer credits from other accredited graduate programs.

Start Date and Application Deadline

The program starts in September and applications are accepted between the first business day in October and May 31. For further information regarding late applications and program contacts check the Program Availability List.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program will be highly qualified to assume school district curricular leadership positions in the areas of Social Studies, Social Responsibility, Social Justice, and BC First Nations Studies. As the number of international students in BC school districts increases annually, graduates will be well placed to work in these expanding programs. Finally, career opportunities in English language international schools are growing rapidly.

When applying to graduate, students will be charged a non-refundable graduation and alumni fee.

Some courses have additional fees to pay for extraordinary class–related expenses.

There will be additional costs for students wishing to complete an International Field Study for GEGD 506.

The Health and Dental Plan fee is in effect only for full–time students at the Nanaimo Campus.
