About the Bachelor of Kinesiology
In this program you explore the nature of human movement and learn essential skills to improve quality of life through activity and exercise.
You gain a broad foundation in many aspects of kinesiology. Your studies take place in many different learning environments including lectures, labs, activity classes and online learning. You also take part in applied research and scholarship.
You will explore the barriers that prevent people from being physically active. You learn to identify these barriers and develop and implement programs, or provide advice, on how to overcome them.
You study topics including:
- biomechanics
- anatomy
- physiology
- motor learning
- sport psychology
- social determinants of health
You also develop skills in interpersonal communication, teamwork and collaboration.
Graduate with many career options
With a Bachelor of Kinesiology, you can join several professional organizations that allow you to work in health and exercise fields.
The British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK) allows you work as kinesiologists in your own practice, or as part of a health care team.
The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) has two professional designations: the Certified Personal Trainer (CSEP-CPT), and the Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CSEP-CEP). With the CSEP-CPT you can work as a personal trainer anywhere in Canada. With the CSEP-CEP) you can work with complex clinical populations in rehabilitation or health care settings.

Admission Information
- General admission requirements apply.
- A minimum grade of "C+" in English 12, or equivalent.
- A minimum grade of "C+" in Anatomy and Physiology 12, or equivalent.
- Completion of Foundations of Mathematics 11 or Pre-calculus 11, or equivalent.
Second year entry
To be eligible for admission to second year, students must have completed a minimum of 26 credits of university courses. Of the 26 credits, students must have completed the following courses with a minimum average GPA of 3.00 (“B”):
- Degree English Requirements, specifically, ENGL 115 and either ENGL 125 or ENGL 135. A minimum grade of "C+" is required in each course.
- KIN 201 – Human Anatomy and KIN 220 – Human Physiology (or equivalent). A minimum grade of "B" is required in each course.
- Two courses (or equivalents) from the following Kinesiology courses. A GPA of 3.00 (“B”) is required for these courses:
- KIN 202 – Introduction to Motor Learning and Control
- KIN 203 – Instructional Strategies for Sport and Physical Education
- KIN 232 – Exercise Prescription
- KIN 253 – Introduction to Nutrition
- KIN 262 – Introduction to Sport and Exercise Psychology
- KIN 280 – Physical Growth and Motor Development
- KIN 291 – Introduction to Kinesiology

Third year entry
To be eligible for admission to third year, students must have completed a minimum of 54 credits of university courses with a minimum GPA of 3.00 (“B”). Of the 54 credits, students must have completed the following for consideration:
- Degree English Requirements. A minimum grade of "C+" is required in each course.
- KIN 201 – Human Anatomy and KIN 220 – Human Physiology (or equivalent). A minimum grade of "B" is required in each course.
- Four courses (or equivalents) from the following list. A GPA of 3.00 (“B”) is required for these courses:
- KIN 202 – Introduction to Motor Learning and Control
- KIN 203 – Instructional Strategies for Sport and Physical Education
- KIN 232 – Exercise Prescription
- KIN 253 – Introduction to Nutrition
- KIN 262 – Introduction to Sport and Exercise Psychology

Enrolment in this program is limited. Students who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the program.
Second and Third year applicants are encouraged to consider the BCAK requirements when identifying courses used to meet elective admission requirements
The program has reserve seats for Indigenous students. Indigenous students can apply for reserve seats by submitting the Access Initiative for Indigenous Students form.
Students who wish to take individual courses without being admitted to the program may do so where space is available and when prerequisites have been completed. Students who take courses in Kinesiology without being formally admitted into the program are not guaranteed entry into the program.
Notes on Progression
Progression through the program is determined by the accumulation of credits via the completion of Kinesiology and elective credits.
For progression into Year 2, a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.33 (C+) must be maintained in addition to the following:
- Completion of at least 24 credits by May 15 including:
- Completion of the Degree English Requirements. A minimum grade of "C+" is required in each course.
- Completion of KIN 201, KIN 220 and two additional required lower-level Kinesiology classes (or equivalents) from the following list. A minimum grade of "C+" is required in each course.
- KIN 202 – Introduction to Motor Learning and Control
- KIN 203 – Instructional Strategies for Sport and Physical Education
- KIN 232 – Exercise Prescription
- KIN 253 – Introduction to Nutrition
- KIN 262 – Introduction to Sport and Exercise Psychology

Notes on Degree Breadth Requirements
In addition to the 69 specialized credits in Kinesiology and 6 required credits in English, students must complete 45 credits of electives, of which a minimum of 12 credits must be from upper-level courses. Further, in accordance with VIU’s Breadth Requirements, students are required to take courses outside of their program of study to ensure that they receive sufficient breadth in their education. In addition to the six credits needed to meet the English Requirement, at least six credits must be drawn from three disciplines (for a total of 18 credits)
