A life-changing decision

As a single mother raising 4 kids that I have 100% of the time, obtaining a career I could manage around my family was my main incentive.  My previous role as retail supervisor no longer supported my family’s growing demands and needs with inconsistent scheduling (late nights, weekends, no routine) and increasingly physically demanding tasks that burned me out at all ends.

The Office Administration (OADM) program at VIU gave me all the tools necessary to successfully earn my Administrative Assistant certificate which helped me transition careers.

Taking the program at VIU was positively life-changing for me and my children.  I am grateful to the instructors and staff at the Cowichan campus for always being so welcoming and friendly during my time as a student.

You will complete the program with the necessary skills to work as an assistant in an office.  If you continue with professional development throughout your careers, you’ll gain more transferable skills. This will give you opportunities to apply for higher-paying jobs as you progress through your career.  Many of our graduates have grown their careers over time and are now:

  • office managers
  • executive assistants
  • business owners
  • payroll clerks
  • legal assistants
  • financial analysts
  • executive directors

Generally, administrative assistant graduates have received starting wages from $18 to $22 per hour to $30+ per hour.  Starting wages depend on the student's experience and training, as well as the workplace and job.  There is a lot of opportunity for growth as an administrative assistant.  Refer to job postings online for administrative assistants to see the array of wages in the different offices.

All VIU graduates who want to work are hired into office jobs upon graduation.  Our graduates get great jobs and have successful careers!

Class sizes do not exceed 20 students.

The Office Administration program does not have an attendance requirement, but if you are funded by an external funder, they do require attendance reports.  Even though you will not be graded on attendance, you will be much more successful when you attend classes on a consistent basis.  Most courses consist of instructor lectures and hands-on experience.

You should be prepared to complete two to five hours of homework per week, which includes pre-reading for each course. The amount of time could vary from day to day, depending on how much is completed during class time.

The Faculty of Trades and Applied Technology grade scale is used in Office Administration.  A minimum of 70% is required to pass all courses.
