Gale force winds and a faulty generator contributed to the deflation of Malaspina College’s air-support gymnasium in January 1980. College officials had been assured the gym would withstand the infamous West Coast weather when it was built in 1977 at half the cost of a regular structure. It was, during its time, the largest air-support structure west of the Rockies. On Nov 19, 1982, the new “conventional” gym was opened.
